The group was founded by a group of local citizens who were concerned about the impact that the arrival of casinos would have on the community. While we don’t oppose casinos per se, we do believe there are better ways for Virginia’s budget to be balanced than by using gambling revenue. We also believe that it’s important for our government to take care of its citizens and not use them as an ATM machine for big corporations.

Preserve NRV is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting our community and environment against the negative impacts of commercial gambling. We are not anti-gambling or anti-casino, but we believe in responsible gambling, which includes protecting our neighborhoods from predatory urban sprawl, protecting our natural resources from contamination by heavy metals used in electronic gaming machines and preventing the destruction of historic buildings.

Since 2005 we’ve worked on behalf of residents across Roanoke County and Botetourt County (including Roanoke City) to stop commercial casinos from coming into our region. In 2010 we helped pass legislation (HB2432) that bans commercial casinos within 100 miles of any city with more than 50,000 residents . In 2011 we partnered with other organizations to defeat an effort by one casino operator to build an offtrack betting facility in Roanoke County . In 2012 we teamed up once again with other community groups to defeat another proposal for an offtrack betting facility
